I'm aware that the subject of this message sounds almost like I'm against self directed learning. If you know me and have experienced any of my teachings in the past, you know that the reality is quite the opposite.
I'm a Huge proponent of supporting users at their moment of need with not only self directed learning but any type of information they need - policies, guidelines, announcements, etc.
Then why am I focusing on problems with self directed learning?
Because I see too many organizations jumping into providing self directed learning material to their employees not understanding the potential pitfalls that many other organizations have already experienced in the past.

The most recent evidence of where I'm seeing this is where organizations are looking into deploying Microsoft Viva Learning. The promise of Viva Learning to aggregate all of your learning content in one location is wonderful, but it does not come without its challenges.
The fact remains that no matter which self learning technology you roll out to your employees, some of the very same problems that you have struggled with in the past will surface again and then you'll be asking yourself if it was worth the effort and expense...
